From Canakkale to Gallipoli to Istanbul

Today, Saturday, was another hot day, but we were on the bus most of the time rather than in the scorching sun. We took the ferry from Canakkale to Gallipoli. Ali told us to exit the bus and go to the top deck for the 15-minute ride across the Dardanelles. Andrew, reading historical information at the ANZAK memorial, and the other male Fulbrighters, seemed to enjoy Gallipoli more than the females. David purchased a military cap and donned it for a photo. Martha bought an Ataturk souvenir. Muzo, our driver, perused the souvenir stalls and drank cay while we were at the military museum stop.

Istanbul is a crowded, busy city of approximately 15 million quite unlike any other city I've ever visited. Our hotel is on Istiklal Street in the heart of Beyoglu. Ali gave us a quick tour of the shopping and restaurant area around the Richmond Hotel. Shop windows and restaurants offered tempting displays. In one window we watched women in traditional dress make gozleme, a very thin pizza-like dough filled with spinach, cheese, or meat. We were on our own for dinner. Martha and I enjoyed mezzes before we came back to the hotel to unpack for the week.
